How to Animate your Avatar: New Xbox Experience

MASSbackwards

Getting your little fella to actually do something on screen is a bit perplexing, but we’ve got a handy little guide with instructions to get your New Xbox Experience avatar doing… stuff.

First of all, when your on the normal dash board, there isn’t that much you can do.  But there are a couple of things:

  1. Head Swivel and Dizzy.  You can make your avatar’s head move to any position by rotating the right stick in the same direction.  It’s as simple as that.  In fact, if you spin the right stick rapidly causing his head to spin about as well, your avatar will eventually go googly-eyed as though they were dizzy.
  2. Hand Wave.  To get your avatar to wave at the screen, simply click in on the right stick.  Many people are even unaware you can click in on the thumbsticks to begin with.  Just apply pressure straight down into the controller and you’ll hear and feel it click.

Secondly, you can make your avatar perform more animations while in the avatar customization menu:

  1. Dizzy Stumble.  You can rotate your avatar by using the left and right triggers.  Hold either one of them long enough and your avatar will stumble in a dizzy spell.
  2. Burp.  Click in on the right stick and your avatar will let out a little burp.
  3. Open Mouth.  Click the right shoulder button and your avatar’s mouth will open and then shut again.
  4. Various Animations and Expressions.  You can get your avatar to cycle through various full body animations and facial expressions by clicking on the left shoulder button.  There are quite a few, so be sure to click through until you see them all.

And that’s it as far as we can tell.  Now the question is when these will actually have any practical implications…
