Grand Theft Auto IV - Xbox 360: Free Hints, Tips, and Games Guides

Hints, Tips, and Games Guides

Need help with something?  Let XboxMASS lend you a hand.

In our Xbox 360: Free Hints, Tips, and Games Guides features, we’re offering the frustrated gamer some reprieve from the toughest bits of their favorite games.  We may even sneak in a cheat code or two.

This time around, we’re looking at the final missions for Grand Theft Auto IV

But be forwarned: there are, of course, major spoilers.  With that out of the way, let’s get down to business.

Once the final mission in Grand Theft presents itself, you’re given two options: you can either work with Dimitri and Pegorino and complete the mission for money, or murder Dimitri instead.  Either results in a similar mission but with different bits in between.  For both paths, we pick up after the events at the church.

Revenge Mission - “Out of Commission”

  • Car Chase
  • Once you have hooked up with Little Jacob and Roman and taken the wheel, you are off after Pegorino’s men in a car chase through Liberty City.  They will initially shoot at you as you tail them, but eventually they will give this up - getting shot up will not be a worry.
  • Eventually you will hit the highway and your targets will swerve into the oncoming lane.  It is not necessary to follow them immediately.  However, they will eventually take the off ramp in the oncoming lane, so you will have to follow eventually.
  • Do not panic, do not be in a rush.  Although Pelegrino’s men drive like drunken maniacs, you do not need to keep their frantic pace.  Sit back, be reasonable, and most of all, read the oncoming traffic to avoid a collision.  Moving at a slower pace will help you out.
  • The same goes for when the chase moves to the close confines of the residential neighbourhoods: chill out and avoid collisions.
  • The Old Casino (Outside)
  • You will eventually trail your targets all the way to the old casino where Pegorino is holed up.  You are also going to find some serious manpower backing him up.
  • Pegorino’s men are pretty poor shots, but you are going to want to keep your distance anyhow and stay behind your car for cover.  You are also going to want to have a sniper rifle equipped for easy dispatching.
  • If you do not have a sniper rifle, the second best option is the assault rifle. There is a little zoom trick as well: while locked onto a target, click in on the right stick to get even greater zoom.  This will allow you to take out targets at far ranges.
  • To the right side is the casino with a low section.  On the roof of that low section are three men.  Take them out first with the sniper rifle as they have the best vantage point from which to shoot you.
  • Directly in front of you are a gaggle of henchmen all scattered about several cars.  I suggest using the sniper rifle once again to pick them off.  Otherwise, you can go for maximum damage with a rocket launcher or grenades and clear out the cars they are hiding behind.  This is not particularly effective, though: your enemies have a knack for getting clear of exploding cars.
  • As you approach the Casino, be away of a small cordoned off pit to the left that usually hides person or two.  Be sure to take them out first.
  • The Old Casino (Inside)
  • The entrance to the casino is on your right.  Take cover behind the left side of the doorway.  There are several enemies within immediate view.  Using an assault rifle is preferable here.  You can take out most of these goons with a headshot while they are still in cover.
  • There are three better concealed enemies to note: 1. To your immediate left there is an enemy typically waiting on the second floor of a steel staircase.  You can take him out from outside by slowly shifting to the right until he comes into view.  2. On the far wall there is an enemy on a landing on another steel staircase.  This guy is right out in the open.  As soon as you see him, pop him.  3. As you go a little further, on your left hand side there is an enemy hiding behind a barrel.  If you have your gun drawn and looking in that direction, you can take him down before he has a chance to react.
  • The Old Casino (Roof)
  • After you have entered the stairwell on the left of the main room, a short cutscene plays out and you chase Pegorino up the stairs to the roof above.
  • Just after the door there are two goons ahead in immediate view to the far right and left.  You should have your gun drawn as you open the door to take these two guys out as quickly as possible.
  • The Old Casino (Back Alley)
  • You will have to chase Pegorino off the roof and into the back alley below.  There is a ladder taking you from the roof to the alley.  Make sure that as soon as you take the ladder you are pressing A and down on the left control stick so that Niko slides quickly down the ladder.  This way you will avoid taking as much damage as possible as there are enemies laying in wait.
  • Immediately take cover against the pillar up against the wall.
  • There are four enemies taking cover: two on the left and two on the right behind crates and other debris.  Again, an assault rifle is the best choice here given their range and that you can still take cover.
  • Once you have dispatched these enemies, you will round a corner ahead to the right and find one more goon taking cover near the wall.  As long as you have your gun drawn and staring down the barrel at him, you shouldn’t need to take cover.
  • As you approach the edge of the building, a car will come screeching to a halt in front of you with two goons ready to hope out.  However, if you throw a grenade in that direction well ahead of time, you will take out the car and the goons before they even have a chance to get out.
  • Dock and the Beach
  • You will then make your way down a set of stairs to a dock.  Pegorino takes off in a boat and your left with a dirt bike.  Hope on the dirt bike and make your way down the beach to the left.
  • Pegorino takes takes potshots at you from the boat, but you do not need to worry.  Concentrate on driving the dirt bike and keeping it steady, as the sand is treacherous and there are also pedestrians that could potentially take you right off your bike.
  • After a short while, you will reach a ramp conveniently highlighted.  Make sure to hit the ramp square on.  In fact, speed does not seem to be an issue: as long as you go up the ramp at a decent speed you will automatically launch off it via a short cutscene.
  • Into the Helicopter
  • This part can prove to be very frustrating.  After you have hit the ramp and launched yourself onto the helicopter landing gear, press A rapidly to get in.  Then you have to chase down Pegorino in the boat.
  • However, Pegorino is packing an RPG and can take you down with one well placed shot.  You must stay low and on his tail.  The trip is actually quite short, so keep pushing after him quickly.
  • Do NOT bother trying to juke and jive or anything of the sort - this will simply make the trip longer and increase the risk of a crash.  Staying straight and narrow seems to result in the highest rate of success.
  • Mind you, you will get shot which is part of the scenario.  Once you are shot, do not give up as this is supposed to happen - keep flying forward.  You are forced to land on Happiness Island as Pegorino is forced to dock as well as his boat is damaged.
  • Happiness Island
  • Once you have landed on Happiness Island, you are off after Pegorino on foot.
  • Pegorino has a few goons left stationed behind him, so do not run blindly into them.  Stay alert with gun drawn and take them out methodically.
  • Stay off the main pathways and get into the trees as you will avoid security and increase your chances of survival.  Besides, that is exactly where Pegorino is going anyhow.
  • Straight ahead off the dock and into the trees you should go.  Be careful, as Pegorino is waiting nearby beside a tree with his gun drawn.
  • Kill Pegorino to finally finish the game.

Money Mission - “A Revenger’s Tragedy”

  • Car Chase
  • Once you have hooked up with Little Jacob and Roman and taken the wheel, you are off after Pegorino’s men in a car chase through Liberty City.  They will initially shoot at you as you tail them, but eventually they will give this up - getting shot up will not be a worry.

  • The Old Casino (Roof)
  • After you have entered the stairwell on the left of the main room, a short cutscene plays out: Dimitri kills Pegorino and now your after Dimitri alone.
  • Following Dimitri up the staircase leads you to the roof where several goons are waiting for you.  Make sure you are ready with gun drawn.
  • The enemies will be on the right hand side, spread about the raised metal roof.  There are about three of them.  These guys are pushovers and you should not have much trouble clearing them out.
  • Once you taken them all out, scale the metal roof over onto the other side.  You will see a helicopter the Dimitri is getting into.  A cut scene follows where Niko grabs onto the helicopter landing skids as the helicopter takes off.  He falls off into the water conveniently next to a power boat.
  • Boat Chase
  • Once you land in the water you should immediately get your bearings and get to the boat as quickly as possible.  Dimitri has an RPG in the helicopter and if you sit for too long there is a chance he will take you out with a rocket before you even get started - it happened to us.
  • Following Dimitri in the helicopter can be a bit dicey because of the aforementioned RPG.  Your best bet is to steer to the left and right in a snaking motion while following him.  Take your time as Dimitri is not going terribly fast and you will not have to keep a frantic pace to keep up with him.
  • Helicopter Chase
  • Little Jacob drops by to pick you up in a helicopter.  Steer the boat directly to the point indicated under the helicopter.  Niko will grab onto the landing skids.  Press A rapidly to hoist yourself into the helicopter.
  • Once you have taken control of the helicopter, you are off on a wild chase through Liberty city.
  • Again, Dimitri has an RPG so you will be forced to stay below Dimitri’s altitude.  As long as you are below Dimitri you should not have trouble getting hit by the rockets.
  • Your biggest threat, however, are the skyscrapers you will have to navigate through.  The helicopter is not easy to handle to say the least, so it is imperative that you keep your cool.  Do not be in a rush, take your time, and you should be ok.  Dimitri is not setting a record pace and it should not be very difficult to keep up.
  • Happiness Island
  • You will eventually be forced to land on Happiness Island.  Once you have landed, you are off after Dimitri on foot.
  • Dimitri has a few goons left stationed behind him, so do not run blindly into them.  Stay alert with gun drawn and take them out methodically.
  • Stay off the main pathways and get into the trees as you will avoid security and increase your chances of survival.  Besides, that is exactly where Dimitri is going anyhow.
  • Straight ahead off the dock and into the trees you should go.  Be careful, as Dimitri is waiting nearby beside a tree with his gun drawn.
  • Kill Dimitri to finally finish the game.
