Gears of War 2: How to Win a Chainsaw Duel

Hints, Tips, and Games Guides

Want to know how to win chainsaw duels in Gears of War 2?  Here are some techniques that may help as part of our Hints, Tips, and Games Guides feature.

Be Aware

You’re going to hear the chainsaw coming, if not see it coming.  There’s always the chance to dive and evade giving yourself some breathing room before revving up the chainsaw yourself.  The important part of this is that you should have at least a few seconds to start thinking about or preparing your technique to best beat your rival.

Thumb or finger?  That is the question.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a finger man.  You heard it here first.  If at all possible, once I’ve engaged in a chainsaw duel I’ll immediately switch to using my index finger to tap the B button as rapidly as possible.  Supported by my thumb in an almost pinching pose, I rapidly shake my hand and arm while keeping my index finger as rigid as possible.  You can’t, in other words, actually rely on your finger alone - it’s just not fast enough.

But the problem here is the transition: if your using your thumb to begin with (which is all but certain), the short time it takes you to switch from your thumb to your finger could cost you.  So this is where being aware comes in handy: if you know the chainsaw is coming, switch to your index finger before you enter the chainsaw duel in order to eliminate the transition altogether.

Then again, you could just use your thumb, but that feels awkard and ineffective.

In Conclusion:

Be aware, use your index finger, switch to your index finger to use the B button before you engage in the duel, and then start immediately tapping like crazy.
